What is a Stellate Ganglion Block?
A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is an outpatient procedure that involves injecting a small amount of local anesthetic near the stellate ganglion nerves in the neck. These nerves are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates stress responses, blood flow, and pain signals.
By temporarily “blocking” these nerves, SGB can help reset overactive nerve pathways, reducing symptoms linked to pain, trauma, and stress.
Conditions Treated with SGB
Research and clinical experience have shown that SGB may provide relief for:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety and depression symptoms
- Chronic pain syndromes (such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
- Hot flashes and night sweats related to menopause or cancer treatment
- Certain vascular conditions
What to Expect During Treatment
- Quick procedure: Typically 15–30 minutes in-office
- Local anesthetic injection guided by ultrasound
- Recovery: Most patients rest briefly before returning home the same day
- Relief: Some patients notice improvement within minutes to hours, while others may need a series of treatments
